From the Residence city

Den Haag has a unique position for cyclists. The city borders the sea, has sweeping parks and boulevards, and is surrounded by the Westland — one of the most expansive and flat areas in the Randstad. In the early morning, the Scheveningen promenade is deserted and the dune roads untouched.

NoBreakfast Den Haag makes use of all of this. Routes change weekly and combine coast, dunes, and polder depending on the season and the wind. One thing never changes: departure at 6:30 AM and the pace that follows.

The routes

One favourite direction runs along the coast toward Kijkduin and southward through the dunes of Meijendel — a stretch of dune landscape with sweeping views and roads used almost exclusively by cyclists and walkers before sunrise. Another route heads through the Westland, through the greenhouse districts and polder roads toward Hoek van Holland.

For those seeking more variety, some routes head toward Delft and the Midden-Delfland polders — a green corridor in the middle of the urbanised Randstad that feels like a different world in the early morning.

The level

NoBreakfast Den Haag rides at high pace. Average around 35–40 km/h, with regular periods above 45 km/h on the straight coastal and polder sections. This requires cyclists who can ride independently in a group: taking turns at the front, holding a wheel, reading the group.

The coastal wind is an ever-present factor in Den Haag. Riders who learn to use the wind to their advantage — tailwind as bonus, headwind as training — cycle better here than anywhere else.
