Rotterdam never stops. Raw, energetic, and always in motion โ the city forms the perfect backdrop for one of the most intense early morning rides in the Netherlands. NoBreakfast Cycling Rotterdam is about speed, cooperation, and the unmistakable energy of a city that never sleeps.
When: Every Friday at 6:30 AM
Meeting point: Erasmusbrug, Rotterdam
Average speed: 35โ45+ km/h
Duration: 1.5 to 2 hours
Level: Experienced riders โ not a beginner session
The city as a starting point
Every Friday, riders gather at 6:30 AM at the Erasmusbrug โ Rotterdam's icon and a symbol of a city that stands in direct contrast to Amsterdam: ambitious, straight-talking, and without detours. The bridge is no coincidence. It embodies everything NoBreakfast Rotterdam stands for.
When the group sets off, the streets are still almost empty. The port industry looms in the distance, the air is crisp, and the roads are wide. Rotterdam is perfectly suited for fast, purposeful rides that leave the city behind and head into open landscapes.
The routes
Routes change weekly, but the character remains the same: fast, flat, and with views. Popular directions include the Hoeksche Waard โ an island region south of Rotterdam with long, straight roads and little traffic โ and the coastal polders to the west. In summer, routes through the Westland and along the Voorne-Putten coast are also ridden.
Don't expect scenic cycling tours. Routes are chosen for speed: long straights, sharp corners, and the occasional sprint that inevitably breaks out when a motivated group rides together long enough.
The level
NoBreakfast Rotterdam is not for beginners. The average speed is around 35 km/h, but it's not unusual to ride sections at 40โ45+ km/h. This requires a solid cycling base, knowledge of group riding, and the willingness to contribute to the group.
That means: taking your turn at the front, riding clean through corners, and holding your wheel without sudden movements. If you've got that, you're welcome. If you're still working on it, start with a more relaxed group and build up to this.
No fuss
No registration, no membership, no fee. Just show up at the Erasmusbrug on Friday at 6:30 AM. The group departs on time โ waiting for latecomers is not the NoBreakfast way. Make sure your bike is ready, your tyres are pumped, and you've eaten enough (or not โ that's half the charm).
After the ride
After the ride there's room for coffee and informal conversation. Rotterdam has plenty of good coffee spots that are already open at this hour for those who want to close out the morning before the day really begins. The social element is part of the experience โ but never an obligation.
